What it’s like to support Israel at NYU

Though it was raining, students still gathered to celebrate Israel’s Independence Day at New York University’s downtown Manhattan campus. Passers-by mostly rushed by as organizers blasted pop music, displayed Israeli flags and shouted “Happy Birthday, Israel!” Some stopped to grab a blue-and-white cookie.

One person shouted at an organizer of Thursday’s event who was draped in an Israeli flag, and someone else criticized the group for a poster featuring a quote by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. praising the Jewish state, but there were no major disruptions.

Hezbollah said to be on alert in fear of Israeli strike

(JTA) — Hezbollah reportedly has declared a state of emergency, fearing an Israeli attack.

The report Thursday in A-Rai al-Yum, an Arabic-language daily based in London, said that the Shiite militia has been on alert since Tuesday, at least in southern Lebanon, in anticipation of an Israeli strike on its forces or facilities. Citing sources within Hezbollah, the newspaper said the alert was over “secret maneuvers” that Hezbollah believes that the Israel Defense Forces has been carrying out recently.

Netanyahu says solution may not include ‘full sovereignty’ for Palestinians

WASHINGTON (JTA) — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declined to say whether he now believes in a two-state solution, saying it was up to the Palestinians to prove that a sovereign state would not threaten Israel.

“I want a solution where they have all the power they need to govern themselves but none of the powers to threaten,” Netanyahu said Wednesday, addressing The Economic Club of Washington. “Does that comport with full sovereignty? I don’t know, but it’s what we need to live.”

Norway ex-PM: ‘Double standard’ on Israel and Pakistan cripples nuclear nonproliferation

MONACO (JTA) — At a conference on tolerance in Europe, a former leader of Norway said that Israel was part of the problem undermining efforts to limit the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Kjell Magne Bondevik, whose last term as Norwegian prime minister ended in 2005, singled out Pakistan, India and the Jewish state in a speech Tuesday at Cafe de Paris here during a conference on tolerance by the European Council on Tolerance and Reconciliation — a think tank headed by European Jewish Congress President Moshe Kantor and former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Colombia extradites Israeli for drug and human trafficking

RIO DE JANEIRO (JTA) — An Israeli citizen accused of belonging to an international crime organization was captured and extradited from Colombia.

Binyamin Cohen, 35, was extradited on Sunday and will face trial in Israel on drug trafficking charges. He had been arrested in Medellin, Colombia’s second largest city, on crimes including arms trafficking, car robbery, home burglary, human trafficking and smuggling cocaine from the South American country to the Jewish state, the local news website El Caracol reported.

In 2013, Cohen was sentenced to 392 days in prison for attempted homicide but he reportedly did not serve the term.
