Israel has announced more West Bank settlement construction. Both the left and right are angry.

JERUSALEM (JTA) — The Israeli government advanced plans for the construction of more than 1,000 housing units in the West Bank on Wednesday, drawing condemnations from both the political left and the settlement movement itself.

Construction on 382 of the 1,400 units will be able to begin immediately, while the others will require several more approvals before breaking ground. A number of the units are slated to be built in isolated settlements, Haaretz reported.

Settlement expansion is “like sticking a finger in the eye of any possible peace process,” said Tamar Zandberg, chairwoman of the left-wing Meretz party.…

Over 1,000 religious leaders urge Mike Pompeo to name anti-Semitism monitor

More than a thousand lay and clergy leaders across a range of faiths signed a petition urging Secretary of State Mike Pompeo to name an anti-Semitism monitor.

“Around the world, violent and even lethal attacks have been made on Jews and Jewish institutions; physical harassment of Jews who wear a kippah in public is all too common,” says the petition addressed to Pompeo, organized by the American Jewish Committee and released Tuesday to media.

There has been no anti-Semitism monitor since President Donald Trump assumed office in January 2017, and Rex Tillerson, Pompeo’s predecessor, emptied the Office to Monitor and…

US Ambassador David Friedman says his remarks about Abbas were not a call for regime change

JERUSALEM (JTA) — U.S. Ambassador to Israel David Friedman said the United States was not looking to “replace” Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas, and that reports implying he said otherwise misquoted him.

On Wednesday, the Religious-Zionist newspaper Shevii released excerpts of an interview with Friedman to be published on Friday in which the ambassador is quoted as saying, “If Abu Mazen is not interested in negotiating, I am sure that someone else will want to. If Abbas creates a vacuum, I am convinced that someone else will fill it, and then we will move forward” with the peace process.

Trump dismisses David Shulkin as veterans’ affairs secretary

(JTA) — President Donald Trump has dismissed Veterans Affairs Secretary Dr. David Shulkin and named his White House physician to the post.

Trump announced his decision to fire Shulkin, which had been widely expected, in a tweet late Wednesday afternoon.

His replacement is Dr. Ronny Jackson, 50, an active-duty rear admiral in the Navy who has served for the past three administrations as a White House physician. In January, Jackson spoke of Trump’s mental and physical health in glowing terms following his annual physical.

Shulkin, who is Jewish, has been embroiled in scandals in recent weeks, including overspending on travel…
